James’s song ‘Sit Down’ has resonated massively in my reflections on recent coaching sessions. I’ve loved this song since it was released – as my son would say ‘it’s a banger!’.
Like many things you revisit from your youth, the words have become more meaningful, and more melancholy, as I’ve grown older. In our busy lives, it’s rare to find a moment to simply sit down, stop, breathe, and untangle the challenging stuff. We’re constantly bombarded, pulled in a hundred directions, and often feel like we have to keep moving, delivering, proving something – even when we’re overwhelmed and running out of steam.
The song’s insistence to ‘sit down, sit down next to me’ perfectly encapsulates the essence of what I hope I can offer and strive to create: a much-needed space for people to truly be heard and feel truly seen amidst the relentless clamour of their lives, and our busy, pressure filled world. It’s a deliberate act of carving out that time and space to sit down with what’s difficult, without judgment and discover what’s possible when you turn down the noise.
“Drawn by the undertow
My life is out of control
I believe this wave will bear my weight
So let it flow”
My recent sessions with clients have vividly illustrated this. I’ve witnessed the visible relief when clients realise they have an ally, someone genuinely by their side, ready to listen without agenda, who can bear that weight with them and perhaps bring some clarity. It’s in these moments that true breakthroughs occur. I’ve experienced this transformative power myself working with great coaches and mentors over the years, and it’s such an honour to bring it others.
When people feel safe enough to articulate their fears, frustrations, and desires, the path forward often becomes clearer. It’s about creating that quiet, unwavering presence that allows them to unpack the challenging emotions, the difficult decisions, and the sometimes overwhelming pressure of everyday life – and discover the solutions that they have been holding all along.
“Those who feel the breath of sadness
Sit down next to me
Those who find they’re touched by madness
Sit down next to me
Those who find themselves ridiculous
Sit down next to me”
Just as the song suggests, it’s about extending an invitation to sit down and confront the discomfort, not alone, but with someone who will hold the space for you with empathy, and allow you to process and ultimately to move forward with greater clarity and confidence.
I’d love to hear your thoughts: Where in your life do you feel the most need for a ‘sit down’ moment? What does being ‘truly heard’ look and feel like for you? Who is that ‘ally on your side’ that helps you navigate life’s challenges? Could you be that ally for someone?
I hope you find someone who you can ‘sit down’ safely with as you move through this crazy world,
Chris x
You can listen to one of my favourite versions of this song below – it’s a lovely acoustic variation. It’s also on my ‘Key and Compass’ playlist on Spotify, alongside a number of other songs that inspire, uplift and challenge me (more blog posts on those to come!).
